The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council, headquartered in Charleston, S.C., is responsible for the conservation and management of fish stocks within the federal 200-mile limit of the Atlantic off the coasts of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and east Florida to Key West. The Executive Director serves as the chief executive officer of the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council, and is responsible for managing all administrative and technical aspects of Council operations.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Plans, organizes and implements fishery management activities in support of Council programs and policies.

Interacts with other councils, state and federal agencies, NMFS, universities and the public.

Coordinates with federal and state partners, other councils and constituent groups to establish and carry out various program priorities.

Serves as spokesman for the South Atlantic Council when participating in meetings and conferences. Has ability to operate credibly in a natural resource conservation and management context.

Provides administrative and technical support for the Council through subordinate staff. Recruits, conducts interviews, and hires staff on behalf of the Council.

The position requires sensitive and facilitative leadership skills as this position identifies critical and complex political, managerial and organizational challenges and recommends courses of action to solve such problems to the Council.

Serves as the focal point for the Council’s efforts to work together toward a common purpose in marine fisheries conservation and management.

Responsible for internal operations of the Council, including the review of all administrative practices.

Responsible for the accounting and control of the fiscal resources allocated to the Council at the direction of the Council.

Skills and Qualifications:

A Bachelors Degree or higher (Masters Degree preferred) with major course work in a fisheries or a related resource or science discipline is required. Must have 10 years of professional experience working in a fishery science or closely related natural resource field, 5 years of which must include supervisory responsibility.

Incumbent must have the ability to effectively communicate with fishermen, scientists, Council members and other resource managers concerning all aspects of plan/amendment development, review and implementation. Must possess a good working knowledge of U.S. fishery resources, with preference toward knowledge of South Atlantic fisheries. Must possess excellent people and managerial skills as well as exceptional leadership qualities.

A working knowledge of the Federal Grants process and opportunities available to the Council.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The Executive Director is responsible for the hiring, supervision, and evaluation of the Council staff (currently 17 employees) and reports to the Council on personnel matters through the Chairman and/or Personnel Committee.

Supervision Received:

The Executive Director receives general policy guidance and direction from the Council Chairman. Incumbent functions independently within the framework of policies, goals, objectives and priorities established by the Council. The Executive Director is expected to carry out office managerial functions without direct supervision.

Starting Salary Range (ZPV-01): $116,021 - $131,492 negotiable depending on education and experience
