Longspine porgy are considered and Ecosystem Component species. Ecosystem Component species are species that do not require conservation and management under a federal fishery management plan, but are included in order to achieve ecosystem management objectives.

Distinguished by elongated dorsal spines.

In the Western Atlantic, found in North Carolina to Georgia in the USA. A demersal fish found in water depths ranging from 5 – 185 meters and mainly on mud bottoms.
