AGENDA HIGHLIGHTS

Joint Dolphin Wahoo & Snapper Grouper Committee Meeting

  • Dolphin Wahoo Amendment 7/Snapper Grouper Amendment 33 - (Fillets from The Bahamas) These two amendments address management alternatives to allow recreational fishermen to bring dolphin and wahoo fillets from The Bahamas into the U.S. EEZ and update regulations allowing recreational fishermen to bring back snapper grouper fillets. The Council is scheduled to approve the amendments for submission to the Secretary of Commerce.

  • Generic Accountability Measures and Dolphin Allocation Amendment - This amendment includes alternatives to establish consistent accountability measures for several species (including golden crab) as well as allocations between commercial and recreational sectors for dolphin (mahi mahi). The Council is scheduled to approve the amendments for submission to the Secretary of Commerce.

Snapper Grouper Committee Meeting

  • Regulatory Amendment 22 - (Gag & wreckfish management measures) The amendment  addresses adjustments to the ABC, ACLs, and OY for gag and wreckfish based on results of the stock assessment for those two species.  The amendment also includes an action to modify the bag limit for gag. The Council is scheduled to approve  the amendment for submission to the Secretary of Commerce.

  • Regulatory Amendment 16 - (Black sea bass pot closure) The amendment includes one action to address the prohibition on the use of black sea bass pots. The action includes alternatives to remove the closure, shorten the timeframe, confine spatially to apply only within designated critical right whale habitat, and confine it spatially based on a depth contour. The Council is scheduled to approve the amendment for public hearings in January 2015.

  • Amendment 35 - (Removal of snapper grouper species and golden tilefish) This amendment would remove 4 species from the Snapper Grouper FMU:  black snapper, dog snapper, mahogany snapper, and schoolmaster. The Council also added an action to the amendment at their September 2014 meeting to address issues with golden tilefish longline endorsements. The Council is scheduled to approve the amendment for public hearings in January 2015.
