Responsibilities: Incumbent serves as the Fishery Biologist responsible for coral, coral reefs and related coral habitats for the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council. Formulates and develops coral and other associated sections of fishery management plans (FMPs), amendments, and related documents. Serves as the lead staff person for the Coral FMP and amendments to the Coral FMP and/or other FMPs affecting coral resources. Provides support in strengthening the management database for each fishery impacting coral and associated benthic habitat and assists in the design of approaches to address needed research. Plans, develops, and prepares projects and technical justification to request programmatic funding in support of the Council’s coral related activities. Represents the Council on coral-related issues at technical and scientific meetings as needed and serves as the staff person responsible for addressing public inquiries pertaining to coral resources in the South Atlantic region. Plans and coordinates meetings of the SAFMC’s Coral Advisory Panel. Presents information to Council members, Advisory Panel members, SSC members, and the public as appropriate.

Qualifications:

  • A Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major field of study in marine fisheries biology/ecology, marine resource management, environmental sciences or closely related field and 1 year of experience or a Ph.D. in the referenced fields of study.
  • Demonstrated analytical abilities, technical writing skills, and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate with a wide range of audiences (federal and state agency personnel, fishermen, scientists, and Council members) on technical issues related to fisheries science, biology, data, and management, are required. Must have the ability to work on multiple projects of varying complexity simultaneously, to adapt to shifting priorities, and to adhere to project deadlines. Ability to work in a team environment, as both member and leader is required.
  • Computer skills (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) are required. GIS and data analysis experience is desirable. Experience working with species occurring in the South Atlantic is desirable, especially coral.

Starting Salary: $52,260 per year, negotiable based on degree and experience.
