Snapper Grouper Committee Meeting

  • Amendment 35 - (removal of species & golden tilefish endorsements) - The amendment proposes to remove black snapper, dog snapper, mahogany snapper, and schoolmaster from the Snapper Grouper Fishery Management Unit. A second action in the amendment addresses issues with commercial golden tilefish longline endorsementsThe committee will review the amendment document and approve for formal Secretarial review. 
  • Regulatory Amendment 16 - (black sea bass pot closure) - The amendment proposes actions to address the prohibition on the use of black sea bass pots. Alternatives include time and spatial changes to the current seasonal prohibition and an action to consider potential new black sea bass pot gear modifications The committee will choose preferred alternatives and approve for public hearings.
  • Amendment 36 - (spawning Special Management Zones) The amendment will specify a process for identifying spawning sites/aggregations for snapper grouper species, including speckled hind and warsaw grouper, based on the characteristics of sites important for spawning (bottom topography, current systems, etc.).  The amendment would also revise the boundary of the Charleston Deep Reef MPA, and include an action to address transit and anchoring provisions within newly designated Spawning SMZs.  The Council is scheduled to review public hearing comments and the System Management Plan, and approve for a second round of public hearings.

Joint South Atlantic & Gulf Council Session

On Thursday, June 11, both the South Atlantic and Gulf Councils will meet in a joint session to discuss several joint amendments addressing management in both regions to include:

  • Joint Charterboat Reporting Amendment- The amendment proposes to implement electronic logbook reporting for charter boats in the South Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. 
  • Joint Coastal Migratory Pelagics (Mackerel) Amendment 26 - (king mackerel management measures) - The amendment proposes actions to update annual catch limits, modify the stock boundary, update commercial quotas, revise sector allocations, and provisions for bag limit sales in the shark drift gillnet fishery. 
  • Joint Coastal Migratory Pelagics (Mackerel) Amendment 28 - The amendment considers ways to separate the commercial permits for king and Spanish mackerel into designated permits for each region.  
  • Joint South Florida Amendment - The goal of this amendment is to provide guidance in determining the best solutions for fisheries management issues that are unique to South Florida. Actions in the draft amendment include measures to address yellowtail snapper, mutton snapper, black grouper, the shallow water grouper closure, and circle hook requirements. 
  • Hogfish Issues

The South Atlantic Council is also scheduled to discuss and approve the following amendments for scoping:

  • Snapper Grouper Amendment 37 (Hogfish measures)
  • Snapper Grouper Amendment 38 (blueline tilefish)
  • Snapper Grouper Regulatory Amendment 23 (Golden tilefish measures)
  • Snapper Grouper Regulatory Amendment 24 (Multiple measures/species including the jacks complex, deepwater species, red grouper, black sea bass, and shallow water grouper closure)
