Snapper Grouper Regulatory Amendment 20

Snapper Grouper Regulatory Amendment 20

Proposed actions: The original actions in the amendment were to address management measures for both snowy grouper and mutton snapper. However, the mutton snapper assessment being conducted by the state of Florida has been delayed until 2014. Therefore, the amendment will only address management measures for snowy grouper.

The Council's SSC was set to review a recently completed stock assessment update for snowy grouper in October 2013 and provide recommendations to the Council. However, the presentation was not available due to the government shutdown. The SSC reviewed both the snowy grouper and mutton snapper assessments in April 2014 and will provide recommendations to the Council at the June 2014 Council meeting.  Council could use the new framework procedure modified in Amendment 27, if approved, or approve the amendment for public hearings in August 2014.

At their March 2014 meeting, the Council approved the Purpose and Need, reviewed options, and selected a range of alternatives for each action.  The Council opted to use the normal framework procedure to develop this amendment. Public hearings were held in August 2014 and Council approved the amendment for final review in September 2014. The amendment is undergoing formal review.
