South Atlantic Fishery Management Council

Snapper Grouper Amendment 53

Amendment summary

Purpose of Amendment: The South Atlantic stock of Gag Grouper was reassessed in 2020 through SEDAR 71 which indicated that the stock is both overfished and undergoing overfishing. The South Atlantic stock of Gag Grouper does not currently have a rebuilding plan. This assessment included landings data which incorporated the new MRIP FES methods. Because previous annual catch limits (ACL) and allocations were based on old methods, this amendment will establish and rebuilding plan as well as offer the Council the opportunity to update both the ACL and allocations based on these new methods.
