Seminar Series: Restoration of Two Key Habitats in Florida
Florida’s estuarine systems are vital and dynamic habitats that serve as nursery areas for many federally managed species. This seminar will highlight the challenges facing two important waterways, the Everglades and the Indian River Lagoon, and explore ongoing efforts to restore their ecological health. Restoration of the Everglades is guided by the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan, which aims to improve the quantity, quality, timing, and distribution of water across this ecosystem. Meanwhile, the Indian River Lagoon has suffered over a decade of harmful algal blooms, leading to significant degradation of water quality and essential fish habitats, and the subsequent development of multiple community-driven restoration efforts. Presenters will provide an overview of current restoration strategies in both systems and discuss progress, where we are now, and what lies ahead.
