Seminar Series: Some Thoughts on Modernizing Fisheries Science and Management
The fundamental tenet of renewable and sustainable nature resource management is that the rate of removal needs to be less than or equal to the rate of replenishment. But how we do that to remain resilient in the face of so many changes to marine ecosystems? The NMFS has (variably) asserted that likely the best way to do so, to actually more fully utilize fisheries resources and obtain the attendant benefits, and to avoid the big nasties, is to adopt ecosystem-based fisheries management. Here I’ll briefly note a few areas of how that can and is being done operationally, with the aim of providing a menu of options for consideration.
