The South Atlantic Bite

The Council will hold four public hearings in August to gather stakeholder input on Snapper Grouper Amendment 60 addressing Commercial Management Measures. Three in-person hearings will be held at 6:00 p.m.:

• August 10 – NC Division of Marine Fisheries Central District Office, Morehead City, NC
• August 11 – Brunswick County Administrative Building, Bolivia, NC
• August 19 – Heckscher Drive Community Club, Jacksonville, FL

A webinar hearing will also be held on August 31 at 6:00 p.m. Written comments must be received by 5:00 p.m. on September 1. Input from the hearings will be summarized and presented at the September Council meeting. Members of the public can also submit comments on the amendment at the September 2026 Council meeting during the public comment period scheduled for September 16 at 4 pm. Shark Depredation Seminar Now Available

Missed the latest SAFMC Seminar Series? The recording of “Shark Depredation in Recreational Fisheries off Florida: From Characterization to Mitigation” is now available on the Council’s website. The seminar explores current research on shark depredation, its impacts on recreational fisheries, and ongoing efforts to better understand and reduce depredation events.

Join the SAFMC Citizen Science Program and the NOAA Library Seminar Series on Wednesday, August 12, at 2:00 p.m. ET for “FISHStory: Unlocking the History of South Atlantic Fisheries Through Historic Photos and Citizen Science.” Citizen Science Program Manager Julia Byrd and Dr. Jie Cao of North Carolina State University will introduce the FISHStory project and discuss how historic photographs and community contributions are helping preserve the history of South Atlantic fisheries while supporting future research.
