Council Takes Final Action on Coral Amendment 11/ Shrimp Amendment 12

Members of the Council met virtually on January 23rd to consider approving Coral Amendment 11/ Shrimp Amendment 12 for submission to the National Marine Fisheries Service for formal review. The Council received a background presentation and listened to public comments before ultimately voting for Preferred Alternative 2: “Establish a shrimp fishery access area along the eastern edge of the northern extension of the Oculina Habitat Area of Particular Concern that is approximately 16.61 NM^2.” During formal review, the National Marine Fisheries Service will announce additional opportunities for the public to comment. Attention Commercial Fishermen! You Are Eligible for USDA Value-Added Producer Grants

Commercial fishermen: USDA’s Value-Added Producer Grant (VAPG) can help you add value to your seafood business – even though the announcement says, “farmer or rancher” and “agricultural products,” seafood is in fact included, and harvesters (including fishermen) are eligible to apply. Grants support planning and working capital to develop new products, expand markets, or boost marketing and processing activities, and several fishing businesses have successfully used VAPGs to grow operations (e.g., selling products in new markets). Submit applications through the USDA Rural Development portal; the current deadline is April 15, 2026.
