Upcoming Seminar: How Citizen Science Can Support Stock Assessments

Join the SAFMC Seminar Series from 1:00-2:30 pm next Tuesday for “How Citizen Science Can Support Stock Assessments.” The presentation will explore how citizen science data are being incorporated into fisheries stock assessments in the U.S. and around the world, including NOAA Fisheries projects. Speakers will also discuss where citizen science has the greatest potential to improve stock assessments, the challenges to integrating these data, and opportunities in the South Atlantic where fishermen can help fill important data gaps and strengthen fisheries management.

Return ‘Em Right Expands to the South Atlantic

The Return ‘Em Right program is expanding into the South Atlantic, bringing release gear and training to offshore fishermen in NC, SC, GA, and East FL. After completing a free 15-minute online course, eligible fishermen can receive a free release gear package for the cost of shipping and handling. The program aims to improve the survival of released reef fish by promoting proper handling and release techniques. It’s a great opportunity to brush up on best practices and get some free gear. Join NOAA Fisheries for On the Water Wednesday

NOAA Fisheries Southeast Region is hosting “On the Water Wednesday,” a virtual discussion on Wednesday, August 19, from 5-7 p.m., focused on the future of recreational fishing in the Southeast. The event will feature opening remarks from Southeast Regional Administrator Andy Strelcheck, followed by an open discussion where fishermen can share their ideas, concerns, and perspectives on recreational fisheries management. The webinar is free and open to the public – register through the NOAA Fisheries WebEx link.
