The South Atlantic Bite

Join in as members of the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council meet this week at the Beaufort Hotel in Beaufort, NC. During the week-long meeting, the following committees will convene: Mackerel Cobia, Dolphin Wahoo, Snapper Grouper, Citizen Science, Habitat and Ecosystem, and SEDAR (Southeast Data, Assessment, and Review). There will also be meetings of the Full Council.

Meetings of the Council’s advisory panels continue next week with the Dolphin Wahoo Advisory Panel (AP) meeting Monday, November 6th beginning at 1 p.m., followed by a meeting of the Mackerel Cobia AP beginning Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. and running through Wednesday. The meetings will be held at the Town and Country Inn, 2008 Savannah Highway, Charleston, SC 29407.

The Council’s Seminar Series continues in October as Council member Laurilee Thompson provides an oral history of the rock shrimp fishery, including her unique perspective as the daughter of Rodney Thompson, the man who pioneered the fishery off the coast of Cape Canaveral in the 1960s into the fishery it is today.

Robert Spottswood, Jr. will become the newest member of the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council when the Council convenes its September 11-15, 2023 meeting in Charleston. Appointed by the Secretary of Commerce, Robert will join Council member Kerry Marhefka, who was reappointed by the Secretary to serve a second term, as they both assume their At-large seats in September.
